One meal at a time…

“Each day is a new day with no mistakes in it….yet.” At least that’s what Anne of Green Gables says, and I believe it. Each day we get to start over and try harder to be better. We try to be a better person, work harder at being fit, and move toward our goals! Each day can be a battle, but we here are fighting a war. We are warriors at getting healthy and fit.

Well, today is day 3 of my #BridesmaidSweating challenge for myself, and I have to admit that today was one of those days that I’m going to have to improve on. It had its positives and its negatives. Y’all I actually got up early this morning (5:00 a.m. AHHH!) and worked out! I have a great relationship with my bed, and I would love to stay there as long as possible, but this girl needed to whip her booty in shape so I did. After my workout, I went to Batten’s Donuts (local donut shop), but I didn’t get a donut. I got an omelet! So positive choice numero dos was made this morning. Woohoo!

Sadly, when I got to work we were celebrating a coworker’s birthday and an intern was leaving for school. So you know what that means? Cupcake party and pizza party! Let me tell ya, that cupcake was AH-MAZING! After my tasty cupcake, I drank my water and continued to work. Then came the pizza party. Three large scrumptious pizzas were ordered. They were Hawaiian, Meat Lovers, and Cheese, and all were thin crust. So anyway, I was SUPER hungry (we all were) so I chowed down. Don’t ask me how many slices cause I have ZERO .  Tonight, however, I figured since there were a couple bad choices I needed to finish out my day with a nice healthy salad.

I say all this to let you know that eating healthy is making the right choice one meal at a time. Obviously, I made a couple of great choices and a couple of terrible choices, but that doesn’t mean I’m giving up. Tomorrow is another day and another day to improve my choices of healthy eating. I’m also going to be getting up early again and working out! That’s not an excuse to eat bad, but it’s just a reminder that my body needs healthy fuel in order to complete a good workout.

That’s what you have to remind yourself too. Your body deserves to be taken care of, and I’m telling myself that too. I’m sitting here chowing down on a great kale salad cause I know my body will need that fuel tomorrow morning to get me through the workout I plan on doing. So for all you out there who are working towards a healthier lifestyle, wanting to look good for that wedding you’re in (like me), or whatever the case may be just know that it’s one choice at a time.

Exercising sucks!

You read that title right! Exercising can definitely suck, but it is also something that I believe is a necessity in life. It’s something that can also be a ton of fun if you find something that you enjoy. But I’m going to save that topic for another date, cause I have a special place that I’m SO excited to share with you.

So today’s topic is finding that time to work out when life hits ya. I mean, we’ve all been there. You seem to have a plan set, a goal in mind, and feel SUPER motivated. Then it’s day 2 and you just feel like you’re ready to give up(like me lol). You feel as if results aren’t happening fast enough and you don’t even have enough time. In this “need it now” society, we want results NOW. But being 100% peeps, it sadly doesn’t work that way.

Just like any great thing you want, it takes time. If you want to meet that weight goal, take the time out of your busy schedule to work towards that goal! Trust me, I know what a busy schedule means. Especially coming from someone who absolutely LOVES her sleep.

Take today for example. It’s day 2 in my #BridesmaidSweating challenge that I have presented myself with. I set my alarm clock for 5:00 a.m., and you want to know what I did? I hit that snooze button till it was 6:45 a.m. This chica did not get up till it was the last ABSOLUTE time to get ready for work, and no thanks to traffic I was late. So I had to work and right after work, I had to get ready for a night with the girls that was already planned. So when was I supposed to find the time to get that oh so needed workout in? If you are saying right after my GNO you got that right!

As soon as I got home, I changed into my yoga pants, tank top, gym shoes and hopped on that dreaded treadmill. Sidenote: I hate running. It is literally the last possible workout that I would want to do. Even though I hate running, I have this challenge and I know that I can’t quit on day 2. Shoot, I’ve already posted on Instagram that I was going to do this.

So here I am, one mile later telling you that YOU CAN DO IT! If you have to workout at 4 a.m. or 10 p.m., find that time to do it! You owe it to yourself to be in the best possible shape possible. Time is something that is precious and shouldn’t be wasted. So if you are sitting on your couch watching your fave Netflix show, get you hiney up and watch that show while running or doing some squats. It’s the little things that you do that count! Granted it won’t happen on day 2. I’m sitting typing knowing that I have a long, long ways to go till I get down to 20 pounds, but I made this promise to myself and gosh dang it I’m going to keep it this time!

#BridesmaidSweating

For all of you bridesmaids like me, you’re hoping that you can fit into the dress that your bride has chosen for you. So this afternoon (I know kind of random), I decided that I was going to challenge myself before my cousin’s wedding to lose 20 pounds before the wedding. Like I said, this decision was made today… Soooo, I don’t really have a finite plan of what I will be doing except eating right and exercise.

So this week will be more of my planning week (sorry in advance), but I’m going to have to mentally and that’s important too!

I haven’t always been this weight. Growing up I played a variety of sports from basketball to soccer. However, I just didn’t care what I ate. I relied solely on my athleticism to keep a healthy weight, and trust me my mom told me over and over that, I should be concerned what I ate too. Well, I just didn’t listen and over the years I would just eat what I liked, exercise here and there and hope that I would keep the same weight. Fast forward to when I finished college and I was 20 pounds heavier than when I graduated high school.

Fast forward to when I finished college and I was 20 pounds heavier than when I graduated high school. After that, I worked out and watched what I ate. I lost a good majority of the weight, but then fast forward again to my first “real” job and I wasn’t keeping up with my exercise regimen and I gained it back and more. So here I am, 24 and trying to lose more weight than I ever have before. My goal weight right now before the wedding is 184!

So the goal for this week is to go to the gym or workout every day, drink a gallon of water a day, and watch what I eat! It’s the baby steps that count y’all! And that’s what I did today. I went for a mile run and I drank my gallon of water!3597535E-9BB2-4B4E-8096-CF1A3F311451.JPG

Before you join in on “The Mob Song”

Beauty and the Beast has hit theaters, and all of us who grew up with the animated version having been waiting in anticipation for the LIVE VERSION to come out! We were given an amazing cast made up of Emma Watson (Harry Potter, The Bling Ring), Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), Luke Evans (Dracula, The Hobbit), Josh Gad (Frozen, Pixels), Sir Ian McKellen (Lord of the Rings, X-Men), Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge, Star Wars), Emma Thompson (Love Actually, Sense and Sensibility), and SO many more fantastic actors that I would be writing for days.

Anyways, for those that know and love the story was in for a spectacular treat with this version of a tale as old as time. The backbone of the animated version is there throughout the entire film, but the slight changes that they made to the story and songs made this movie something to write about. Another reason to write about this movie is because of the controversy that has been blowing up Christians’ Facebook and other sorts of social media since the premiere of this movie.

Let me first dive into some of the memorable moments in the  movie that allowed me to enjoy, and declare that right now this is probably my favorite movie of 2017. I will also go ahead and say that this movie will probably win or at least get nominated for an Oscar. There is no way that it can’t, and if it doesn’t then The Academy has lost its marbles.

Favorite Moments in the Movie (Warning some spoilers are ahead)

  1. The Music
    If you previewed the soundtrack before you went to see the movie, like I did, then you may have not been too impressed with some of the vocals. Let me ease your minds and tell you that the music will evermore be something I love to listen to! It was so great to actually feel like I was watching a musical. That’s one reason this movie is magical. It allows you to feel like you’re in a theater watching a play. One part is the ending when you know that the actors are having their curtain call and you want to stand and give them a standing ovation
  2. Belle and the Beast
    When you watch the animated movie, you don’t really feel the love that the Beast and Belle have for each as they get to know one another. When the song “Something There” starts you start to get that giddy feeling you get when watching a romance. When I watch the animated film it doesn’t feel that way. Dan Stevens and Emma Watson did a fantastic job!
  3. Changing of lyrics
    If you think about the time period of this movie, then you appreciate the fact that the writers decided to put that in the script. For example, in singing “Gaston” Le Fou tries to spell Gaston’s name, but because he is living in the 1700s and is not of royal blood he probably didn’t receive a proper education so he can’t spell Gaston’s name. It’s the small humor parts like that add to the movie
  4. Backstory
    I’m going to write was added, but let me say this the additive backstory for some of the characters add depth to them. You understand why Gaston is a beast, how the beast lost his way, and why Belle is so strong.

Those are just a few parts of the story that made me smile and fall in love with entire movie. Now to the part that most have been up in arms about: Le Fou. For those that don’t know, Le Fou is portrayed as being gay, and Christians around the nation have been in heated debates about whether or not to take their children or to even go to the movie themselves because of this added plot line.

First off, if you actually go and watch the movie you can barely see it. Unless you have taught your children about the LBGT community, then more than likely they will not even notice. It’s us adults that will see that plot line. SO CHILL!

Secondly, Le Fou actually has character development in the story that you SHOULD teach your children about. What I’m talking about is how you should teach them about choosing friends carefully. In both movies, Le Fou in the beginning goes along with everything Gaston does and says. However, in this updated version he has a conscience and starts to question his friend’s motives and actions. So you want to talk about Le Fou? Tell your children how he was choosing the wrong friend to hang out with, but then decide to make the right decision.

Lastly, make this movie a learning tool. Teach your children that the LBGT community are people like us. We don’t have to like the choices they make, but you know what? Should we like movies that have people lying it, how about movies with infidelity, or what about movies about murder? Do you boycott those? I bet you don’t, so get over it. Love everyone and let God be the judge. Be thankful that He is the ultimate judge cause that is one tough job. Those that are a part of that community are some of the sweetest people I know. I don’t have to hate the sinner just the sin.

All in all this movie was everything I had hoped it would be and more. I felt like a little girl again, and it even had elements in there for adult me. Disney did a FANTASTIC job on bringing this story to life! (I even teared up here and there throughout the movie) Beauty and the Beast (2017) will be a moment that lasts forever!

Let’s Talk Red Cups and Starbucks

As you all have probably heard today, there are a lot of people upset with Starbucks. Now let’s be real, how many times a day do you think Starbucks hears complaints? A lot is my guess. However, this complaint has gone viral, and unless you live under a rock then you already know what I’m talking about.

So for those of you who do live under a rock, I am talking about Starbucks’ new holiday cup. You know their famous red cups that for some ring in the holiday season. Instead of coming up with a festive design, Starbucks went extremely simple and came out with a red cup with their logo. You might be scratching your head at why this is such an upset. Well for some Christians this was a stand against Christianity. As a Christian here are my two cents (well maybe more than that) about those red cups.

To begin with, I’m a Christian and whether Starbucks decides to put a Christmas theme on their cups or not is not why I celebrate this festive season or the meaning behind it. Now if they start throwing hateful messages on the cups against Christians, then my attitude might change, but they are not going to be the ones to ruin my Christmas spirit because they decide to go with a plain red cup. To be honest, I hardly noticed at all. I was just excited the pretty red cups were out to ring in the festive season!

Second, instead of looking at it as a war against Christian, why not look at the plain red cup as something pure. Think about it, what color was Jesus’ blood when He bled on the cross? It certainly wasn’t blue! It was red, and what does that blood do for our sins? It cleanses us. So in a way Starbucks has supported the Christian thought in that they used a pure red cup, pure from anything except for their logo. Hebrews 13:12 states “And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood.” 1 John 1:7 also states “But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.” As you can see, the color red can symbolize the pure blood of Jesus that cleanses us of our sins.

Thirdly, if you are basing your Christianity and Christmas spirit from a red cup, then you need to seriously reevaluate your Christian walk and why would you let some company steal away your Christmas spirit? There’s something my mom always asks me when my attitude is in the wrong. She always asks me, “Why are you letting them control you?” So I ask those of you who are upset, why are you letting them control you and take away your Christmas spirit? Do you really think it bothers them? No, cause they are still going to continue to make coffee and sell coffee.

Lastly, I understand that Starbucks has had a lot of backlash from Christians before. Trust me there was many times that I almost boycotted one of my favorite coffee shops. Not because of the prices, but because there are some of their beliefs that I don’t agree with. That being said, I did get a chance to talk to someone who is a Christian working for the company while I was in college. I asked him what thought about Starbucks’ stance on some issues that disagree with the Christian belief and how he handles working for a company that goes against his beliefs, and what he said has stayed with me. He told me that even though their beliefs are not his own, there is so much good that Starbucks does that outweighs the bad. For example, they help those in developing countries obtain jobs.

So my challenge for you, and in the spirit of Christmas is to look on the bright side. Look for the good in this. See how the red cups can be a symbol for Jesus’ blood that cleanses. Research the good causes that Starbucks supports. Instead of focusing on the bad, focus on the good, because even Jesus ate with tax collectors, prostitutes, and those that the religious leaders deemed evil.

For the Right Reasons: A Book that You Should Read

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE watching The Bachelor or The Bachelorette. It could be that I’m a romantic at heart and I just love, Love. It could also be the fact that I come from a small town, and NOTHING ever happens here, and so to find drama in my life I watch this show. Sounds sad? I know! It could also be that my own love life is in the pits right now and so I watch it to take notes on “what-not-to-do”, how not to be that “crazy girl” or take notes on how to flirt. Whatever my reasoning is, I just really like watching the show. However, this post is not about the show essentially, rather it is about a bachelor who was on the show and then wrote a book.

If you remember the contestant Sean Lowe than you already know what kind of a guy he is and what he stands for. I, however before reading his book, knew nothing about him. I actually didn’t get a chance to watch his season. I don’t know what happened I just didn’t watch it. Anyways, I heard about him and his wife Catherine, and started to follow them on Instagram and Twitter, and I absolutely admired their relationship! They are my what you would call #relationshipgoals.

Sean in his book describes how he was in a rough part of his life when he finally prayed every day for something more to happen to him. It was then that his brother in-law and sister secretly signed him up for the Bachelor. It was there that his, as the show would say, journey began. He went on to be a contestant, lost and then was The Bachelor. What was truly inspiring about his story was that he relied on making decision in love based on biblical terms and the advice of his friends and family.

As a Christian woman who is seeking love in a world that seems to be lost, I think that is what inspired me about Sean and his relationship with Catherine. He prayed that God would send him a woman who would push him as a Christian and who he could live life together with. God did just that. Maybe for us “normals” it won’t happen on a TV show, but it will happen.

Many of us who feel like love has skipped over them forget that God has a perfect plan for our lives. The word that has been constantly said to me these past few months with all my friends getting married is patience. We have to be patient and just enjoy life.

In Song of Songs 8:6-7 it says, “Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away. If one were to give all the wealth of one’s house for love it would be utterly scorned.” We need to have a love for someone that cannot be blown out like a small flame. We want a “blazing fire,” and that big of a fire doesn’t come from rushing love. It comes from taking things slow and continuously building that fire so that it is something that is all consuming.

Sean and Catherine from what I can tell have this kind of love. From reading his book, I can tell that Sean stands strong in his faith. Of course, he hasn’t been the best Christian all his life and he knows that. There’s a part of his book in which he talks about this. He has fallen, but he has also gotten back up. That is what is truly amazing about this book. It’s a story about sin, redemption, falling in love, and finding love in God. If you ever have time be sure to read this book! It’s a great book to encourage you on your walk in faith and finding true love.

The 3-Day Military Diet: My increasing hunger and thankfulness

For the last couple of weeks one of my best friends started what is known as the 3-day military diet. It’s diet that has you eat certain foods to lower your calorie intake while at the same time boosting your metabolism. Anyways, on week one she was able to lose up to six pounds and when she was on her four days off she only gained back one. Since we are going to the beach in June with some more friends, I figured I better try and work to get that bikini body.

So, I started the military diet yesterday. For breakfast, I was only allowed to eat one piece of toast with some peanut butter on it, a half of a grapefruit (that I suffered through eating), and a cup of coffee with no creamer only stevia (sadly). By the time lunch rolled around, I had already drank two liters of water which is unusual for me since I LOVE to snack. Yet, with this diet I can and so now I’m drinking water as if the entire world is about to dry up soon. That is to say by the time lunch came I was super ready to eat. So for lunch I had a half cup of tuna, a piece of toast (no peanut butter this time), and a cup of coffee with stevia. Let me just say that I am so happy I can have my cup of coffee! After lunch, I was feeling a bit better. However, I workout quite a bit. Exercising has never been my problem. It’s my love for food and trying new foods, and somewhat overloading on food when I finish a workout. Cause you know I worked for it. Anyways, when I had finished my two Jazzercise classes (which is a great place to workout and you should try it if you get the chance!) I had to go play volleyball. By the time we had finished our second volleyball game I needed food, like stat! So I went to a close gas station and found the banana that I was allowed to eat, but only half of it. When I finally got home I was able to eat my supper which consisted of a small apple, a cup of ice cream, a cup of green beans and three ounces of meat. Needless to say, I was too tired and hungry to do much else that night.

All through that one day, I have realized how blessed I am to even be eating these low calorie diets. If you think about it, when people who live in developed countries go on diets and complain about not being able to eat, there are others who live in the world who really can’t eat anything else. They don’t have the option to go on a diet to try and lose weight. They are truly suffering from hunger. So, as I continue on to day two and thank the Lord for the piece of toast, boiled egg, and half a banana that I had for breakfast, and the five saltine crackers, boiled egg and cup of cottage cheese that I will be able to eat for lunch. Thinking of this diet from a different perspective makes it less horrible, and I’ve also lost weight from it, so YAY!

As I encounter day two of this three day diet, I hope that I can still put a smile on my face and realize my hunger is not as bad as others around the world and even in America.
